This volume celebrates the beginning of our fifth year of publishing Clinical Cancer Research. In the four years it has been in existence, this journal has become an important voice for the clinical cancer research community, already ranking 12th out of 100 cancer-related journals in the 1997 Science Citation Index (SCI) Journal Citation Report. The journal is available in 2,400 libraries throughout the world.
The past year began with the welcome notification of the inclusion of Clinical Cancer Research in Index Medicus and MEDLINE. The 1998 issues are already available in these sources and the National Library of Medicine has agreed to index articles back to Volume 1 as soon as possible. In August, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) informed us that Clinical Cancer Research had been selected for extended coverage in ISI products. This means that the tables of contents will be indexed in the print versions of Science Citation Index, in addition to their ongoing inclusion in SciSearch, Research Alert, and Current Contents. We are very excited about the coverage of Clinical Cancer Research in these information sources, which will promote maximal visibility of our articles and will accelerate advances in the field.
The number of manuscripts submitted to Clinical Cancer Research has risen from 500 in our first year of publication to nearly 800 in 1998, and we trust that authors will continue to look to the journal as an optimal publication outlet. The acceptance rate is presently 52%. For 1999, we are targeting an acceptance rate of 40%. The goal of publishing only the highest quality papers is paramount and, to this end, the Senior Editors have agreed to increase the stringency of review.
Our aim for Clinical Cancer Research is to be the leading journal publishing articles in the areas of translational and clinical cancer research. Beginning with this issue, our table of contents is organized into the four main categories that reflect the manuscripts submitted to the journal:
Clinical Trials
Molecular Oncology, Markers, Clinical Correlates
Experimental Therapeutics, Preclinical Pharmacology
Cancer Biology, Immunology, Cytokines
The Senior Editors, Deputy Editor, and Editor-in-Chief provide broad expertise in these areas, and we continue to encourage submission of manuscripts directly to the editor among that group whose area of research is most relevant to the paper.
The Editorial Board wishes to acknowledge the hard work of our many colleagues who provide expert reviews for manuscripts submitted to Clinical Cancer Research. Because of their dedicated efforts, Clinical Cancer Research has already become an established journal of great importance to investigators working in translational and clinical cancer research.
John Mendelsohn, M.D.
Editor-in-Chief
